Geocomplex Ponorite

... from Katerina in Get to know Bulgaria! Visits 2972 4 July, 2020

Geocomplex Ponorite (also known as the Abyss) is located about 400 meters from the village of Musina, Veliko Tarnovo region, Bulgaria. It is two precipices with a depth of 25 meters, connected underground by a karst gallery, and it is assumed that the galleries lead to the Musinska and Emen caves.

Once upon a time, people feared a natural phenomenon and believed that precipices lead to the lower earth of the dead. In 2006, according to a European project, the place was improved and suitable for visitors. Right next to the entrance of the complex there is a gazebo. Metal stairs with a railing leading to the bottom of the abyss were built. If you plan to go down, I recommend that you wear appropriate shoes, because it is muddy. Interestingly, with each step you go down, the temperature drops sharply. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a visit.
