Clay Castle in the valley of the Fairies - Castelul de Lut Valea Zanelor is located near the city of Sibiu, Romania and its most interesting feature is that it is built with organic materials-clay, straw, sand and wood.

While trying to explore what was interesting to see around the city of Sibiu, I came across pictures of this interesting castle and decided it was worth seeing it. It is about 35 km from the city of Sibiu. To be honest, my expectations were that we would see this interesting building in the middle of nowhere and so, but we were definitely pleasantly surprised.

Clay Castle in the valley of the Fairies - Castelul de Lut Valea Zanelor is located near the city of Sibiu, Romania and its most interesting feature is that it is built with organic materials-clay, straw, sand and wood.

A little bit about the history of the Clay Castle-his construction began 2014 year in order to become an ecological hotel, as his most interesting characteristic is how it was built. The owners decided to build it to avoid modern construction techniques and everything was built with organic materials – clay, straw, sand, wood. The base is made of concrete and stones, the construction is made of wood, and the walls are made with a mixture of water, straw, clay and sand. The exterior plaster is lime and sand and the towers are from the river stone. The hotel has ten rooms with unique design and shapes, each with its own entrance, and some of them can enter. The towers are also accessible to visitors. Tourists can also enjoy the surrounding landscape, the splendor of mountain Fagaras and the Porumbacu River, which runs along the castle. Along the river there are tables, wooden stools and thatched bales where you can easily enjoy the view and have a picnic in the fresh air. There is also a souvenir shop, where you can pick up something to remember, coffee, water and the like.

For now, the Clay Castle is only open for visits. Why it is not yet functional hotel I could not find information. But the owners hope that this will happen soon. It is also expected the opening of a restaurant where local organic food will be offered.
