The beautifully preserved fortress of Fagaras is located in the town of Fagaras, located between the towns of Sibiu and Brasov in the romanian region of Transylvania.
It was built 1310 year on the site of a wooden fortress from the 12th century, which was burned by the tartars. The fortress has 5 towers and 3 floors. Today it is one of the best preserved fortresses not only in Romania, but in Europe as well. It is surrounded by two rows of walls, between which there is space filled with land. Around the fortress there is a deep ditch filled with water, so access to it is only through a single bridge. All the armed attacks against her were unsuccessful and she was never conquered.
Between the 15th and 17th centuries, the fortress was considered one of the strongest fortifications in Transylvania. During this time it functioned mainly as a residential home of different princes and their families. But in the 18th century the luxury of the fortress remained in the past, because it was transformed into a military garrison.
In 1948, the Fagaras fortress was conquered by the communists and functioned as a political prison, after which it was transformed into a museum in 1954.
The museum is extremely interesting. In it are exhibited roman artifacts and a collection of medieval weapons, a beautiful collection of icons, painted on glass, also a section that focuses on the folk and artistic crafts in the area. In the citadel is kept one of the most infamous and fearsome torture tool in Europe – Iron Maiden, as personally for me it was the most interesting subject there. The museum is now home to a public library and hosts the Murmur music festival.
The zoo in Pitesti, Romania, is located in the natural Forest Park "Trivale" and it was definitely a pleasant destination to visit.
