Raysko Praskalo – A Hike to Bulgaria's Highest Permanent Waterfall

There are places in Bulgaria that you keep telling yourself you'll visit someday. Raysko Praskalo was one of those places for me, and honestly, my only regret is not coming here sooner.

I started the hike at around 8:30 in the morning and returned to the car at about 4:30 in the afternoon. In total, the round trip was nearly 26 kilometers. It was a long day, but one of those adventures that makes you forget about the tired legs as soon as it's over.

Most of the trail goes through a beautiful forest, providing plenty of shade during the hike. Even so, I would recommend bringing a hat, enough water, and some snacks for the journey.

If you don't want to carry too much food, you can stop at Rai Hut, located right below the waterfall, where hikers can enjoy a meal and take a well-deserved break.

A few facts about Raysko Praskalo

Raysko Praskalo is the highest permanent waterfall in Bulgaria, with an impressive height of 124.5 meters (408 feet).

It is located in the Balkan Mountains, on the southern slopes below Botev Peak, the highest summit of the mountain range. The waterfall lies within the Djendema Nature Reserve, part of the Central Balkan National Park.

Raysko Praskalo has been a protected natural landmark since 1965 and is fed by the waters of the Praskalska River, originating from a permanent snowfield below Botev Peak.

The hike

The hike itself is long but incredibly rewarding. I wouldn't describe it as an easy walk, especially considering the nearly 26-kilometer round trip, but the scenery makes every step worth it.

The trail passes mostly through the forest, making it pleasant even during warmer days. There are also a few open sections, so bringing a hat is definitely a good idea.

Starting early is highly recommended if you want to enjoy the hike at a comfortable pace and spend some extra time around the waterfall.

Seeing the waterfall for the first time

Before visiting, I had seen countless photos of Raysko Praskalo and thought I knew what to expect. I quickly realized that pictures simply can't capture what it's like in person.

I was lucky enough to see the waterfall with a strong flow of water. You can hear it long before you reach it, and as you get closer, the spray becomes impossible to miss.

Some visitors were wearing raincoats, but honestly, I don't think they helped much. The water is everywhere, and if you want to get close to the waterfall, just accept that you're probably going to get wet.

And that's exactly what makes the experience so memorable. You don't just look at the waterfall – you actually feel its power.

Rai Hut

Rai Hut is located right below the waterfall and is one of the highlights of the route. It's a perfect place to rest, enjoy a meal, and recharge before heading back.

For me, having a mountain hut along the trail was a big advantage, although I would still recommend carrying enough water and a few snacks in your backpack.

What should you bring?

  • Comfortable hiking shoes;
  • Plenty of water;
  • Light snacks or lunch;
  • A hat for sunny sections of the trail;
  • A rain jacket if the weather looks uncertain;
  • A camera or a fully charged phone;
  • An extra layer of clothing, as mountain weather can change quickly.

Is it worth the hike?

Absolutely.

Raysko Praskalo is one of those places that truly deserves a spot on your travel list. The hike is long, but the views, the forest, the mountain atmosphere, and the waterfall itself make the effort worthwhile.

For me, it was a wonderful day spent in the Bulgarian mountains. There were tired legs, a few wet clothes from the waterfall spray, and a lot of walking, but there was also that satisfying feeling of having visited a place that was even more beautiful than expected.

If you enjoy hiking and discovering beautiful natural places, Raysko Praskalo should definitely be on your Bulgaria travel itinerary.
