Monastery of St. Nicholas is located on a small island in lake Vistonida, near the fishing village of Porto Lagos, Greece. It attracts a large number of visitors and pilgrims every year due to the exotic view and landscape of the Thracian Sea, which people can enjoy.
The place is easily accessible by car, as the parking lot itself is located next to the main road. It is free, with plenty of parking space. There is no dress code for visitors, but it is still possible to give you scarves or skirts at the entrance to cover yourself with. This is the code for visiting many religious sites in Greece. Next to the monastery, there is a gift shop where you can find all kinds of souvenirs, cards, traditional cakes, icons, religious books and more.
The other interesting thing about the monastery is that it is located in the national park of the Nestos Delta and the lakes Vistonida-Ismarida. It is the largest national park in Greece with a well-preserved ecosystem with over 300 species of birds that are protected by environmental law. Walking on the wooden bridges to the monasteries, in addition to various species of birds, you can see different species of fish and large crabs.
Whether you are religious or not, the monastery is definitely worth a visit. I personally think that I have already visited it at least 5 times and I plan to go again. The place is magical and is like an oasis of peace and quiet!
