Momina rock is a natural phenomenon in the Rhodopes, with breathtaking sheer and high cliffs. The place is very suitable for a day walk in nature and is only about 20 kilometers from Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The path to the picturesque canyon is located about an hour's walk from the center of the village of Izvor. According to the legend during the turkish slavery, one of the most beautiful girls from the neighboring village, in order not to become a slave and lose her honor from the turks, decided to choose the highest rock in the area and jump from there. Hence the name Maiden's Rock.
For starters, I recommend that you don't trust the route that Google Maps will show you. You have to reach the village of Izvor and park in the center. From there you walk along the street that passes by the town hall and the community center in the village (you can see in the photos below). The trail is easily passable.
First, you will reach a fountain with signs and you can deviate to the chapel "St. Elijah ”, recently restored. I recommend you to visit it either on the way or on the way back from the rocks. It is located on a nice green meadow with a fountain and a huge gazebo (you can see it at the end of the video on YouTube). On the way to the rocks, you will reach another chapel - "St. Archangel ”, which was built in 1926 and has somehow preserved its ancient appearance. Next to it, there is also a fountain and a sign that you should continue to the left. Walking along the path you will pass another fork, which leads to the third chapel in the area - "St. The Mother of God ". It is very close and worth a visit. It is located on a nice hill with a beautiful view of the rocks.
From here a few more minutes walk and in front of you will suddenly open a view of the rock massif. The words are few to describe the view. Wherever you turn, the landscapes are unique - a view of the picturesque canyon, the rock massif, the Rhodopes, the village of Hrabrino, the Thracian lowlands, and your look will reach all the way to the Balkan Mountains. There are many trails in the area that you can explore as well as discover the pond, which is located near the rocks.
