The Womb cave

... from Katerina in Get to know Bulgaria! Visits 2956 31 May, 2020

The Womb cave has long been on my list of places to visit. Finally came her turn. It is located about 20 km from the town of Kardzhali in the Eastern Rhodopes, next to the picturesque Kardzhali dam.

There are other Womb caves around the world, but this one is considered to be the largest in the world. It is more than 3000 years old. The entrance to the cave, as well as its interior layout resemble a female womb. That's where the name of the cave came from. It has a depth of 22 meters and a height of 3 meters. At its bottom there is a carved altar, where through a crack at a certain time a sun beam enters and illuminates it. The action depicts fertilization between the sun and the rock. The thracians believed that through this act the God-king was born into the white world.

The cave has a strong energy and is therefore a preferred destination for many. It is used for meditations and various rituals.

How to get to the cave? The first important thing I want to point out is that if you use Google Maps, the exact place where the trail starts is marked incorrectly. The path starts from the main road, so on your way there, keep an eye out for the sign to the cave.

The other thing that is important to prepare for is that to get to the cave you have about 2 km of walking uphill to rocky path. You will have at least an hour of moderate walking to the cave itself. There are many places for rest, so it is good to stock up on water and food. The trail is extremely picturesque and beautiful, and on the way back from the cave you will feel satisfied and full of energy.

Some time ago I showed you the so-called cave "Little Womb" near the village of Nochevo, which is smaller, very interesting and more easily accessible to see.
