Urquhart is one of Scotland's largest castles. Its ruins are located on the shores of the famous and creepy Loch Ness lake.

The earliest written records of the existence of the medieval castle date back to the 1200. He played an important role in the wars of Scottish independence in the 14th century. Repeatedly he was attacked, destroyed and fortified afterwards. In 1692 the year was partially destroyed in order to prevent its use by the jacobite forces and subsequently disintegrated. The 20th century has become a monument and is open to visitors, being among the most visited castles in Scotland.

From the ruins of the castle are found a remarkable collection of objects, whose exposition you can see in the visitors centre, where you can see a short film dedicated to the dramatic 1500 year history of Urquhart. From there, when you walking to the medieval castle, you can see the trebuchet (a powerful siege machine used in the Middle ages), then you will get to the portal, protected the castle from the attackers so many times. In addition, during the tour you will see another dark prison cell, the citadel and the spectacular tower with stunning, open views of Loch Ness lake.

We managed to make a very pleasant and memorable stroll along the different paths around and inside the castle itself.

Do not miss to taste the different types of whiskey with which the locals are proud, and rightly so, in view of the fact we hardly knew our car afterwards!
